What are Collagen and Zyplast?

Collagen and Zyplast are injectable materials, developed as fillers to temporarily eliminate scars and wrinkles.

Collagen is the thinner material and used to fill fine and superficial wrinkles around the eyes and mouth. Zyplast is thicker for use on deeper wrinkles and creases, and is generally used in lip augmentation. In some cases, to achieve the best results, your dermatologist may recommend the use of both materials.

These materials, marketed by Collagen Corporation, are developed from bovine collagen which has been chemically modified to reduce the chance of causing allergic reactions in humans.

What happens in collagen treatment?

The collagen, mixed with a small amount of anesthetic to numb the area, is injected with a small needle. For patients with strong concerns about any pain, a topical anesthetic can be applied to the area ten minutes before the collagen injection to further reduce discomfort.

How long will the treatment last?

Filler materials such as collagen are not a permanent treatment, and results can be expected to last from three months up to approximately one year. The length of time these results may last depends on the patient's age, the depth of wrinkling, the location injected, and the amount of collagen used.

What risks are involved?

In rare cases, patients may experience an allergic reaction to the materials. To ensure this does not occur, we will test your skin six weeks before the filler material is used on the face. The test is usually placed under the skin on the inside of the upper arm.
