Subcision - What is it and How Does it Work?

During a recent Radio show I was asked about improving acne scars.  Subcision is one of the procedures I use to improve depressed acne - or traumatic scars. The procedure is quite simple and very effective.

One reason you can see depressed scars is that fibrous bands pull the skin inward. I use a a small NoKor needle to cut the fibrous bands from inside. All that is needed is a small amount of local anesthesia (cream or lidocaine solution), steady hands, and a thorough knowledge of skin anatomy. Here is how it works....

The NoKor needle is a minature blade on top of an 18 gauge needle. The skin s numbed and the needle inserted under the depressed sar. Then, using a fanning motion in the horizontal direction, the fibrous bands are severed. I can immediately see the scar improve. A few drops of your own blood, which contains collagen and elastic fibers, rushes into the depression and replaces some of the lost collage. The procedure is repeated on a monthly basis and can be combined with Chemical peels, lasers, or fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, or Radiesse. The 18 gauge needle is so small it does not leave a permanent mark.

Downtime is minimal and even patients with sensitive skin and an olive complexion may benefit fom the procedure.

I hope this explanation was helpful.

COMMENTS:

Hi Dr Rahimi,

I am very puzzled as I do have acne scars only on my right side of my face. What I'd like to know is is subcision only done on the scars portion or all over the face? What are the side effects? Is there any disadvantages on this surgery? May I know the whole procedure how acne scars are treated and isn't very effective after doing subcision and laser? Hope to hear from you.

Best Rgds
Janice

Hello. I had a laser resurfacing peel (erbium) and when the swelling went down so did the "result". I just had my second subcision treatment with a plastic surgeon. He wants to wait longer than a month between treatments. Is this typical? I want results and am tired of hating my skin because of this. Any other procedures that may help? Also Ive had other surgeries and am familiar with other surgeons, but the problem is that the Dr. I am seeing is the only one that does this procedure in my area. Its frustrating that this is all that seems is left for me to do.
